NewcastleGateshead is the leading the way in the UK’s new and renewable energy sector as well as playing a key role in the region’s low carbon technology industry.

In 2010, Newcastle was named the Most Sustainable City in the UK for a second year running by Forum for the Future as a result of its electric vehicle charging point initiative as well as an urban bee’s programme.

The Gateshead College Skills Academy for Sustainable Manufacturing was set up to train and skills staff for the emerging jobs in the low carbon market. The sustainable centre, based at Nissan's Washington plant, also provides a world-class learning facility for employers, apprentices and students, supporting more than 1,000 apprentices every year. As well as working directly with Nissan the apprenticeship scheme is supporting private and public sector employees.

The region as a whole is also an international leader in low carbon vehicle development and NewcastleGateshead plays an important role in the regional supply chain. As one of only eight Government designated “Plugged In Places” the aim is to have 1,300 EV charging points by 2013.

The North Bank of the River Tyne, part of a nationally designated Enterprise Zone, is a major centre for the oil, gas and offshore wind industry in the UK. Major redevelopment projects are underway in this area including The Neptune Energy Park, which will see the 80 acre, former Neptune shipyard, transformed into a hub for renewable energy industries.

NewcastleGateshead has organisations specialising in all aspects of the sector including a cluster of international research and technical consultancies, a strong research base in Newcastle and Northumbria Universities leading in areas including marine, engineering and design and leading professional and business services for the energy sector such as Carillion Energy Services.

The Marine engineering sector is also strong in NewcastleGateshead with companies such as Bridon International and Soil Machine Dynamics Ltd (SMD) based in the area.

Bridon is the world-leading specialists in the manufacture of wire and rope solutions and SMD is a leading manufacturer of subsea remotely operated vehicles (ROVS), operating in hazardous environments worldwide.

With the North Sea’s oil and gas industry in close proximity, NewcastleGateshead attracts some of the leading energy, engineering and design companies, such as the Siemens Energy Service Training Centre. The area is also well placed to benefit from the Dogger Bank offshore renewable energy zone.

One of the biggest shipping companies in the world, Maersk has teamed up with training specialists with Advanced Industrial Solutions to create a new wind and maritime training centre in North Shields, to prepare for the thousands of potential jobs in the renewable energy sector.

The increase in this sector has seen the creation of companies such as NEPIA, one of the UK’s leading marine liability insurers.

Companies in NewcastleGateshead are also well placed to take advantage of the work being conducted at the National Renewable Energy Centre (NaREC) based in Northumberland, a world-class testing facility for offshore wind, wave, tidal and electrical network technologies.
