NewcastleGateshead is fast emerging as a hotbed of creative talent, with almost 8,000 people employed in the creative industry. The sector comprises 1,775 businesses with an annual turnover (in 2009) of £866m.

There are a number of large creative employers in Newcastle Gateshead, such as Eutechnyx (games), and Blue Kangaroo (design) in Gateshead.

Within the digital sector the area has become a world leader for digital games development and start-ups, with an impressive cluster of specialist companies and university courses dedicated to encouraging entrepreneurs and students.

Among the most successful companies in the North East is Eutechnyx, founded in Gateshead in 1987, which enjoys global sales of its motor racing and sports video games.

Another leading business is Ubisoft Reflections. This evolved from Reflections Interactive, formed in Newcastle in 1984. The Newcastle base is part of the world’s largest games developers and publishers, Ubisoft, which employs 6,700 people worldwide. The team in Newcastle has been involved in the development of games for all three major console platforms working on titles such as Driver San Francisco and Just Dance 3.

Companies based in NewcastleGateshead benefit from strong sector support and networking opportunities. Codeworks Connect, the largest digital community in the North of England is merging with Gateshead Council’s creative industries networking group, The Hub, designed to help make the most of the collective minds in the region’s creative business community.

Gateshead is now also the location for the Northern Design Centre, the new home for the North East’s leading creative and design businesses, it offers creative spaces for the region's hottest designers, incubation units for exciting start ups, studios for established businesses, and bespoke conference and research facilities. And with a dedicated business collaboration network (that forms part of a Knowledge Transfer Network), Design Network North, based on site, Northern Design Centre has emerged as the regional focal point for NewcastleGateshead's growing design industry. The project has been awarded £4.95 million from the European Union's European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) Competitiveness Programme 2007-13.
